WHAT ARE OUR OBJECTIVES?

The Objectives of the Society are to advance the scientific study of psychology and to promote its application. The Society encourages the dissemination of psychological knowledge and thought through scientific meetings, annual conferences, professional contacts and publications. It offers advice on issues of a psychological nature affecting society at large and on matters of professional interest to psychologists.

WHAT BENEFITS DOES THE SOCIETY OFFER?

  Members and Affiliates of the Society enjoy the following rights and benefits:

 

1.       Information on all activities of the society - scientific meetings, conferences, social functions, workshops and training programmes.

2.       Opportunities to consider matters of psychological interest with other members and affiliates.

3.       Opportunities to meeting psychologists visiting Hong Kong.

4.       Priority to attend training programmes organized by the society.

5.       Inclusion in the published lists of members and affiliates.

6.       Receiving the following publications:

        A regular Newsletter, giving information regarding Society news and job opportunities for members and of relevant conferences, both local and international. It also provides a forum for discussion of topics of current interest.

        The Societyˇ¦s journal, which aims at promoting the advancement of psychological knowledge relevant to Hong Kong and other Chinese Societies. It publishes reports of empirical research, theoretical papers, review, notes and discussions in all fields of psychology.

In addition the Members of the society will

7.       Receive a membership certificate.

8.       Participate in the decision-making process of the Society.

9.       Have the right to vote at all General Meetings, both Annual and Extraordinary.

10.   Be eligible for election to the Council and its committees,  and

11.   Be able to apply for membership of the Division of Clinical Psychology, the Division of Educational Psychology or the Division of Industrial-Organisational Psychology and for Registration under the Societyˇ¦s Board of Registered Psychologists.

 

WHO CAN BECOME MEMBERS?    

The Membership consists of Honorary Fellows, Fellows, Associate Fellows and Graduate Members.

Graduate Members  must possess either  an Honours degree for which psychology has been taken as a main subject, or a postgraduate qualification in psychology, from a university or other tertiary institution approved by the Council.

Associate Fellows  must fulfil the requirements for graduate membership and in addition  either possess  a postgraduate qualification in psychology at Masters or Doctoral level and at least five years working experience in the field ( including the time required to obtain the postgraduate qualification)  or at least six years relevant working experience.

At the time of their election, Fellows must be associate fellows or has been eligible for associate fellowship for at least ten years and have contributed in a significant manner to the advancement of psychology as a science or as a profession.

Honorary Fellows are elected from time to  time at the Annual General Meeting on the recommendation of the Council.

 

 WHO CAN BECOME AFFILIATES?

No technical qualification shall be required on the part of a candidate for election as an Affiliate provided that s/he has a long standing interest in psychology or that his or her professional occupation is normally with a genuine interest in psychology. Affiliates are not allowed to advertise their relationship to the Society.

 

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

There is an Annual Subscription, which at present is as follows:

Honorary Fellows Nil  
Fellows $520  
Associate Fellows $440  
Graduate Members $340
Affiliates $235

No other compulsory charges will be levied. There may be charges for optional participation in special functions, like the Annual Conference.

 

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY?

Persons who consider themselves qualified to become members must complete an Application Form which is available from the General Secretary at the registered address.

The applicants for membership must normally be proposed and seconded by two members of the Society who know the applicants personally and are prepared to provide information with regard to their qualifications for membership.

If the applicants for membership are unable to find a Proposer and Seconder, they may contact the Public Relations Officer or the General Secretary by writing to the registered address of the Society, as given above.

After completion, the Application Form should be sent to the General Secretary at the registered address.

All relevant transcripts and other documents required on the application form and an application fee of $50, which is non-refundable, must be included with the form. An application which is not supported by the required enclosures will not be processed.

If elected to membership by the Council, the applicants for membership will be required to sign an undertaking to observe the rules and regulations of the Society in general and the Code of Professional Conduct in particular. Intending applicants my therefor wish to read the Articles of Association, the By-laws and the Code before submitting their application.

 

HOW  TO BECOME AN AFFILIATE?

Persons who wish to become Affiliates should write to the General Secretary at the registered address, stating the nature and duration of their interest in psychology and their professional standing and occupation.

Personal Data (Privacy Ordinance)

In compliance with the Personal Data (Privacy Ordinance), the Society would like to inform applicants and Members of the following:

 

I.                    On a permanent basis, the Society holds personal data of its current and past members. In order for the Society to process all applications for membership or for changes in membership in accordance with the Regulations of the Society, it is necessary for the applicant to supply the Society with personal data.

 

II.                 The information requested in the application form is needed for the identification of the person and her/his educational and professional qualifications. The information is retained, so that in the case of later disputes, the qualifications forming the basis for the membership can be ascertained. The information may also be needed in connection with election to a higher status of membership.

 

III.               The data held by the Society relating to applicants and to Members will be kept confidential, but the Society may provide such information to:

A.                 any person under the duty of confidentiality to the Society, that is to staff members of the Society and to the members of the Council and its relevant Committees and Divisions, and

B.                 to any third party holding a court order for the disclosure of the information.

Also the Society is publishing a register of its Members, giving the following information: Name, professional degree, professional specialty and address of practice.

 

IV.              The Society does not hold any personal data of persons whose applications for membership have been rejected by the Council on the recommendation of the Membership and Professional Standards Committee. The application form and all supporting documents will be destroyed one month after the applicant has been informed of the rejection, unless the applicant then requests the return of the material. Thereafter the Society only retains minutes to say that an application from a person of such a such a name has been rejected.

 

V.                 Under the Ordinance:

A.                 Any individual has a the right to check whether the Society holds data about him or her, and the right of access to such data,

B.                 any Member has the right to require the Society to correct data relating to him or her, which are shown to be inaccurate,

C.                 any Member has the right to ascertain the Societyˇ¦s policy and practice in relation to personal data and to be informed of the kind of personal data held by the Society.

 

VI.              In accordance with the terms of the Ordinance, the Society has the right to charge a reasonable fee for the processing of any requests for access to personal data.

 

VII.            Requests for access to data or correction of data or for information regarding policies and practices of data should be addressed to the Hon. Secretary of the Hong Kong Psychological Society, Ltd, at the Societyˇ¦s official address.

 

WHAT ARE THE AIMS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE DIVISIONS?

The Clinical Division was founded in 1981. It consists of qualified Clinical Psychologists, who have obtained a Masterˇ¦s or higher degree in Clinical Psychology and apply their specialist  knowledge and skills in the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of psychological problems and promotion of better  psychological well-being.

The Educational Division was founded in 1987. It consists of qualified Educational Psychologists who have obtained a Masterˇ¦s or higher degree in Educational Psychology. The members are involved in research, teaching, and/or applying their specialist knowledge and skills in the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of problems arising as a function of the schooling of children and young people.

The Industrial-Organisational Division was founded in 2000. It consists of qualified Industrial-Organisational Psychologists who have obtained a Masterˇ¦s or higher degree in Industrial-Organisational Psychology. The members are employed in private, public and academic sectors, and work in areas including organisational consultancy, organisational research, personnel selection, psychometric testing, job design, performance management and appraisal, change management, consumer behaviour, human factors, and training and development.

The Divisions elect their own Chairpersons, Hon. Secretaries and Hon. Treasurers. From time to time the Divisions arrange meetings, workshops and seminars, aiming at the continuous sharpening and updating of the professional knowledge and skills of the members. They also publish material relevant to the practice of their specialty and for the information of the general public.

The names and specialty of the members of the divisions are indicated in the published Register of the Society.

HOW TO BECOME MEMBERS OF THE DIVISIONS?

Members of the Society who consider that they have the appropriate qualifications for membership of a division should write to the Hon. Secretary of the Society at the registered address, requesting an application form for the division in question. The completed form should be returned to the Hon. Secretary.

   

WHAT DOES IT COST TO BE A MEMBER OF A DIVISION?

The Membership fee for each  Division is $150 per annum and should be paid to the Hon. Treasurer of the  Society  together with the Annual fees to the Society.

WHAT ARE THE AIMS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE REGISTER OF PSYCHOLOGISTS?

As a first step towards the statutory registration of psychologists in Hong Kong, in 1993 the Society has established a Register of qualified psychologists. The Registrar publishes annually a list of all Society- registered psychologists and issues a Certificate of Registration  for public display at the place of practice of the member. The membership of the Register must be renewed  every year in order to ensure that the members are actively practising and actively enhancing their professional knowledge and skills. The current Admission Fee is $500 and the annual Membership Fee is $150.

Psychologists who wish to have their names inscribed in the Register should apply to the Registrar at the Societyˇ¦s registered address.
